Events of the past week have confirmed beyond all doubt that the UK political system has failed and we now need to take a different path.

Westminster is deadlocked and not even the Prime Minister sacrificing herself has been enough to get the DUP and the Brexit ultras to back her dead deal. It’s some achievement to attempt to pay the ultimate price and still end up short-changed.

At the same time, the momentum behind putting the final say back to the people continues to grow.

While there was no outright majority for any option in the first attempt at indicative votes, a People’s Vote won more support than any other option – much more than Mrs May’s deal has in two attempts.

It’s also clear that revoking Article 50 remains an option which could win support if MPs were faced with a choice of that against a ‘No Deal’ catastrophe.

So it was timely that MSPs – Tories aside – united behind the Scottish Greens’ call to revoke Article 50 if the People’s Vote option cannot be secured.

On Friday, I will join my fellow Scottish Greens co-convenor Maggie Chapman in Glasgow to meet with EU nationals who have been treated appallingly and who still face huge anxiety and uncertainty. It’s vital that we stand up for their rights and continue to work together to build a people’s Europe.

Greens are also impatient for Scotland to have the chance to forge its own future. Scotland’s remain vote and the Scottish Parliament’s efforts to reach out have been shown contempt at every turn since the Brexit vote nearly three years ago.

The First Minister has said she will set out the timing for a second Scottish independence referendum once the fog of Brexit is lifting. I agree that some clarity over our European future is needed but it’s also clear now that the monumental disrespect that Scotland has been shown is reason enough to push on for independence.

Add to that the spectre of the bad boys of Brexit, the racists and reckless free-marketeers who want to drive us off a cliff, taking over at the top of the Tory government. They have contempt for devolution and they will seize any chance to grab back powers and impose an exploitative, deregulated free market on us.

Surely no one can now argue that Scotland’s interests are best served by this broken Westminster system?
