WHILST the Hillman Imp had its faults (Letters, May 14, 15 & 16), it was ahead of its time in some ways.

I moved a single bed from one end of Paisley to another by folding down the rear seats and opening up the rear window.

The bed then slipped in, sticking over the rear engine compartment.

I could transport six crates of lemonade to the badminton club in the same way.

MY dearly departed friend Alex (Fraser) owned a Hillman Imp in circa 1972 and three of us set off for Scarborough for the September weekend. All was plain driving until we came across Sutton Bank – a steep hill – on the main road to the East Coast. Willy (McIlroy) and I had to lug our bags from the "boot" up the hill while Alex drove said car to the top.

Other than that, the Hillman Imp was a great wee car.

Dumbarton.

FURTHER to your readers' story of the quirkiness of the Imp: my father was loaned an Imp from a friend for our family holiday to Redcar in 1971. We were successfully able to fit seven people, me and my brother sitting on adults' laps, obviously before the introduction of compulsory wearing of seat belts, and could fit all our luggage on the roof rack.
