IT would appear that I follow the same clothing philosophy as Rosemary Goring; the "never part with anything" one ("My clothes have few outings and get a great innings", The Herald, May 15). Just now it is the boot department with which I am having a spot of trouble.
Wearing only boots, year-round, they do have a lot of wear and tear. The left-foot one of the black pair – bought in the early 1980s – has got a split near to the toe. It has had one before but responds well to the super German glue called Klebfest, which with the aid of a large rock on top of the boot to weigh it down, after a good stuffing with the sticky stuff, ensures that the boot will be fine for another year or so. Unless I am caught out in heavy rain in which case it will need more Klebfesting. I was quite amused, when looking for the glue and finding it in the box marked "Electrical – beware!" to also find four little plastic packs of Tic Tac mints. It says best before 12/09/13, and who bought them I have no idea as I do not like mints.
As far as this repairing of clothes and footwear is concerned my late husband would say that we were not poverty-stricken and could afford a few new clothes now and again. But I am a child of the Second World War and rationing. Bring back rationing and save the planet.

Why are you making commenting on The Herald only available to subscribers?
It should have been a safe space for informed debate, somewhere for readers to discuss issues around the biggest stories of the day, but all too often the below the line comments on most websites have become bogged down by off-topic discussions and abuse.
heraldscotland.com is tackling this problem by allowing only subscribers to comment.
We are doing this to improve the experience for our loyal readers and we believe it will reduce the ability of trolls and troublemakers, who occasionally find their way onto our site, to abuse our journalists and readers. We also hope it will help the comments section fulfil its promise as a part of Scotland's conversation with itself.
We are lucky at The Herald. We are read by an informed, educated readership who can add their knowledge and insights to our stories.
That is invaluable.
We are making the subscriber-only change to support our valued readers, who tell us they don't want the site cluttered up with irrelevant comments, untruths and abuse.
In the past, the journalist’s job was to collect and distribute information to the audience. Technology means that readers can shape a discussion. We look forward to hearing from you on heraldscotland.com
