FOR a child who wanted to be “king of the world”, and a former Foreign Secretary to boot, Boris Johnson has barely racked up the air miles of late. Covid has seen to that. 

Now he’s out there, the face of “Global Britain” in the post-Brexit world, with an appointment at the White House today. With the inevitable grip and grin photocall will come endless mentions in the media of the “special relationship” between the UK and the US. 

In the summer Downing Street let it be known, gently, that the Prime Minister was not a fan of Churchill’s phrase, believing it made the smaller partner seem “needy and weak”.
