AN ally of Alex Salmond has been charged following an alleged "disturbance" outside a block of flats in Greenock.

Chris McEleny, general secretary of the former first minister's Alba Party, was allegedly involved in an incident on Kelly Street.

The Daily Record reported claims he was seen kicking and punching a close door while shouting and swearing.

The 35-year-old Inverclyde councillor was previously a member of the SNP before defecting to Alba.

An Inverclyde Council spokesman said: “It would be inappropriate for us to comment on a live police investigation.”

A Police Scotland spokeswoman said: "A 35-year-old man has been charged in connection with a disturbance that took place in Kelly Street, Greenock on Sunday, 26 September, 2021.

"A full report will be forwarded to the Procurator Fiscal.”
