Jackson Irvine, Kilmarnock's on-loan Celtic defender, is a surprise call up to the Australia squad.

The 20-year-old has been a key player for the Ayrshire club this season since joining in August, and could make his debut next month when Australia face France in Paris and Canada in London, having already secured their place at next summer's World Cup.

"We want to have a look at some other players who could make an impact with us in the future, said the Australia manager Holger Osieck.

"We will probably use an experienced team against France, but I would expect to use some of the new players against Canada."

Irvine is also eligible to play for Scotland because his father is from Aberdeen but he has always maintained he would choose Australia if they called him up.
