Here's our assessment of how the players performed:

MANCHESTER UNITED

DAVID DE GEA: Had a reasonably quiet night considering Bayern's early dominance but did produce a fine save to deny Arjen Robben. 7/10

PHIL JONES: Deployed at right-back for most of the game and was kept busy but his positioning was excellent and some interventions crucial. 8

RIO FERDINAND: Held tight back line alongside his familiar partner Nemanja Vidic and was usually to be found in the right place. 8

NEMANJA VIDIC: Also strong at the back, where did a particularly good job to keep Thomas Muller quiet, and capped a fine display by heading United in front. 9

ALEXANDER BUTTNER: Had some shaky early moments when he was caught by Bayern's pace but took no chances and did a respectable job before being forced off. 6

MAROUANE FELLAINI: Gave up possession too often and only occasionally imposed himself going forward before being caught out for Bayern's equaliser. 6

MICHAEL CARRICK: Unable to get hold of the game in midfield and often had to backtrack, although at times to good effect. 6

RYAN GIGGS: Could not exert the influence he did against Olympiacos and was withdrawn at half-time. 6

ANTONIO VALENCIA: Collected a reckless early booking and was lucky to escape further punishment. Provided an occasional attacking option before being withdrawn to right-back. 6

WAYNE ROONEY: Struggled to get involved as much as he would have liked but showed his usual commitment to drive United on and his delivery for Vidic's goal was excellent. 8

DANNY WELBECK: Spurned United's best opportunity of the first half after making a lively start, when he also had a goal disallowed, but then faded. 6

SUBSTITUTES:

SHINJI KAGAWA (on for Giggs, 46): Despite some calls for him to be used more of late, he did not have great influence after entering the fray. 6

ASHLEY YOUNG (on for Buttner, 74): Prompted a reshuffle at the back when he came on for the injured left-back but saw little of the ball out wide. 6

JAVIER HERNANDEZ (on for Welbeck, 84): Fresh legs late in the game. 6

BAYERN MUNICH

MANUEL NEUER: Not often tested by United but in the right place when he was and showed great composure to deny Welbeck. 6

DAVID ALABA: Often a threat on the left as Bayern swept forward. 7

JEROME BOATENG: Former Manchester City man looked the most vulnerable of the Bayern defence and a slip to allow Welbeck in almost proved costly. 6

JAVI MARTINEZ: Was also troubled by Welbeck early on but unruffled thereafter. 6

RAFINHA: Also keen to get forward, provided a threat down the right. 7

BASTIAN SCHWEINSTEIGER: Provided a thumping finish for Bayern's equaliser but after an untroubled first half, he was unsettled in the second period and saw red for two bookable offences. 7

PHILIPP LAHM: Provided solidity in the midfield as Bayern controlled play early on but was forced back to defensive duties later on. 7

FRANCK RIBERY: Regularly ran at the United defence and linked superbly with Robben, lacking only the cutting edge. 8

TONI KROOS: Controlled the game in the first half, pulling the strings in the Bayern midfield, but United then started to get to grips with him. 8

ARJEN ROBBEN: Looked like Bayern's chief weapon and was tough to handle, having one superb effort saved by De Gea and a number of further opportunities. 8

THOMAS MULLER: Lacked presence up front and was taken off after Bayern fell behind. 6

SUBSTITUTES:

MARIO MANDZUKIC (on for Muller, 63): Immediately provided a focal point for the Bayern attacks after they fell behind and was instrumental in setting up the equaliser. 7

MARIO GOTZE (on for Kroos, 74): Tried to add a bit more dynamism but United watched him well. 6
