Celtic have entered the race to land highly-rated Dutch defender Wesley Hoedt, after Lazio had a bid rejected, writes MARK WALKER

The classy 20-year-old stopper has won rave reviews this season with AZ Alkmaar and has attracted interest from across Europe.

AZ are thought to be looking for around £1.7 million and Italian giants Lazio had a £1million offer rejected this week.

However, Dutch sources have revealed Celtic have also expressed interest in the Holland Under-21 defender, along with Ajax and FC Twente.

Celtic's chances of landing Hoedt could be decided by whether the Italian side decide to increase their bid.

Another factor will be the future of the Parkhead club's existing Dutch centre back, Virgil van Dijk.

AZ's sporting director Earnie Stewart said: "Lazio made a bid for the player, but it was not accepted.

"We know there are also other clubs looking at him."
