CELTIC have freed striker Holmbert Fridjonsson to join Icelandic side KR Reykjavik.

The Parkhead club signed the 22-year-old on a four-year deal for £100,000 two years ago, but he failed to make a single first team appearance.

He was loaned to Danish side Brondby last season and he claimed they wanted to sign him permanently after he netted one goal in 11 appearances for the Copenhagen side.

But KR have moved to snap up Fridjonsson and he will sign a two-and-a-half year deal with the capital side when the Icelandic transfer window opens later this month.

It's a return to his homeland league for Fridjonsson, who netted 10 goals in 21 games for Fram.

The Icelander, who has two full caps for his country, will try and use the move to re-establish himself in the national side.

The Celtic Development squad, meanwhile, are to play in the prestigious Durban Under-19 International Football Tournamen in South Africa later this month against the likes of Arsenal, AC Milan and PSV Eindhoven.
