CARL MCHUGH has been named as Motherwell's new captain following the retirement of veteran midfielder Keith Lasley. 

The club announced on Wednesday that the 37-year-old has hung up his boots to take up a new role as assistant manager to Stephen Robinson. 

And McHugh, who joined the Steelmen from Plymouth Argyll last summer, has been named as the new skipper with Steven Hammell as vice-captain.

The 24-year-old, who is capable of playing in defence and midfield, made 22 appearances for 'Well last season, having missed the first half of the campaign through injury.
