Neil McCann let rip at his nine-man Dundee side after watching them exit the Betfred Cup to Championship side Ayr United at Dens Park.

In-form forward Lawrence Shankland sent McCann's men spinning out at the last-16 stage with a double before Michael Moffat secured a 3-0 victory.

On an awful day for the Dark Blues, both Sofien Moussa and Genseric Kusunga were sent off.

Substitute Moussa received two yellow cards within 10 minutes of each other with the score at 1-0 and Kusunga was shown a straight red card for a poor challenge on Moffat in stoppage time.

Manager McCann said: "It was really poor from Moussa and Gensy.

"I told Moussa he can't make silly fouls especially the one where he dives down to make a tackle when he's already on a yellow card.

"This is a very dangerous game and he paid the price for making a poor challenge.

"I told him during the game you have to keep calm, but for whatever reason he's lost his composure.

"Gensy has then lost his composure at the end and is now banned for next weekend which adds insult to injury.

"Moussa being sent off has had a great impact on the game. But on the whole our performance had a greater one.

"Ayr were very good. I think 3-0 flattered us to be honest. We know this is unacceptable."

Shankland, reportedly attracting interest from elsewhere, has now scored 11 goals in eight games this season.

Ayr boss Ian McCall said: "It was a great team effort.

"The lads all played their part and Lawrence has shown he can score goals against anybody.

"Now we can look forward to the quarter-final draw and see what it throws up."
