RANGERS kid Stephen Kelly hopes he can establish himself for Steven Gerrard’s side after making his Ibrox bow against Ayr.

The midfielder was handed his competitive debut for the Light Blues in the 4-0 Betfred Cup win.

Boss Gerrard is keen to promote his top young talents through the ranks at the Hummel Training Centre this term.

And Kelly is determined to go from strength to strength and earn a place in the first team squad.

“I am absolutely delighted to come on in the Cup and get a good 4-0 win,” Kelly told the Official Rangers Podcast.

“It was great to be on the pitch and after all the years of hard work I have finally done it. I am happy.

“He (Gerrard) told me to get up to the speed of the game quickly as I could and move the ball quick.

“I just need to keep working hard and find out how to get to the next level and how to get round to the first team changing room and become a member of the squad.

“That is what I want to do so I am sure that if I keep working hard and listening to the gaffer and the rest of the staff there is a good chance of that.

“All the players have been really good since I have been training with them and there have been a few new ones coming in as well. They have all helped a lot and off the pitch as well they are all good guys.

“In the Games Programme last year, we were playing against a lot of good, technical players and the teams played expansive football. Ayr were very disciplined and for a big part of the game they made it difficult for us.

“It is just playing against different types of teams.”
