SCOT GEMMILL reckons Steven Gerrard’s trust in winger Glenn Middleton is the biggest compliment the Rangers kid could receive.
Middleton has become an integral part of the Light Blues squad this season as he has made the most of his chance to impress both domestically and in the Europa League.
He joined up with the Scotland Under-21s on Monday as Gemmill prepares his side for the crucial European Championship double-header with Ukraine and England this week.
Middleton has already gained plenty of experience on the international stage and boss Gemmill is pleased to see the 18-year-old going from strength to strength this term.
He said: “I’ve been impressed. Not surprised but impressed in terms of there’s a difference between these players getting the chance then taking it.
“He’s showing he’s made a great start in doing that. He has to still recognise and understand it is only a start and he has to continue to push. I’m sure his club will help with that.
“He’s been fantastic for us. He’s been to three Under-17s finals with us as a young player.
“He can play for the 21s for the next two campaigns. As a young player he’s still playing at a disadvantage in that regard.
“It won’t be until not the next campaign but the one after where he’s actually of age so there’s a lot to look forward to in terms of his contribution.
“It comes down to trust. The fact the Rangers manager is prepared to trust him in the games of the magnitude he has is the biggest compliment you can give.”
Why are you making commenting on The Herald only available to subscribers?
It should have been a safe space for informed debate, somewhere for readers to discuss issues around the biggest stories of the day, but all too often the below the line comments on most websites have become bogged down by off-topic discussions and abuse.
heraldscotland.com is tackling this problem by allowing only subscribers to comment.
We are doing this to improve the experience for our loyal readers and we believe it will reduce the ability of trolls and troublemakers, who occasionally find their way onto our site, to abuse our journalists and readers. We also hope it will help the comments section fulfil its promise as a part of Scotland's conversation with itself.
We are lucky at The Herald. We are read by an informed, educated readership who can add their knowledge and insights to our stories.
That is invaluable.
We are making the subscriber-only change to support our valued readers, who tell us they don't want the site cluttered up with irrelevant comments, untruths and abuse.
In the past, the journalist’s job was to collect and distribute information to the audience. Technology means that readers can shape a discussion. We look forward to hearing from you on heraldscotland.com
