Blair Kinghorn: Reliable at the back and useful going forward while never producing the turn of speed that marks best form at club level6
Tommy Seymour: Superb aerial fielding was high point of a quiet first half for the Glasgow winger, who got a bit more involved as Scotland attempted a late fightback7
Huw Jones: Costly missed tackles for North and Davies tries showed up defensive shortcomings. Always a threat in attack5
Alex Dunbar: Fine early break came to nothing and his defensive partnership with Jones still leaves something to be desired7
Lee Jones: Harried North well to deny the winger a try early on, but had a couple of misjudgments as the Welsh pressure began to tell7
Adam Hastings: Missed early penalty but opened scoring for Scotland in 26th minute. Took the wrong option at times but does not look out of place at this level7
Ali Price: A solid enough outing for the Glasgow Warriors scrum-half but he is still lacking the spark that characterises his game at its best6
Allan Dell: Scrummaged well and was also prominent in the loose at times before giving way to Allan 15 minutes into the second half6
Stuart McInally: Captain scored a superbly executed try from a lineout and provided assured leadership on a difficult afternoon7
Willem Nel: Fought well in the loose as well as being his usual reliable self in the scrum7
Ben Toolis: Dependable source of clean lineout ball but made crucial handling error late on as Scotland tried to claim a late try7
Jonny Gray: Showed indiscipline as Scots struggled to halt the Welsh onslaught and missed second-half try that might have sparked fightback7
Jamie Ritchie: Winning just his third cap, the Edinburgh back-row fought hard in the loose as Wales threatened to dominate physically6
Hamish Watson: Lacked composure at times as Wales’ defensive solidity frustrated the Scots, but showed the fighting spirit needed late on8
Ryan Wilson: Worked hard and tackled harder to try to stem the red tide7
Substitutes: Fraser Brown: Came on for last 25 minutes. Alex Allan: Replaced Dell. Simon Berghan: On for Nel after 55 minutes. George Horne: On for last 20 and perked things up a lot. Peter Horne: Saw late try chalked off after failing to control. Matt Fagerson: On 20 minutes from time. Grant Gilchrist: Another late substitute. Darcy Graham: Made his debut with seven minutes to go.
Why are you making commenting on The Herald only available to subscribers?
It should have been a safe space for informed debate, somewhere for readers to discuss issues around the biggest stories of the day, but all too often the below the line comments on most websites have become bogged down by off-topic discussions and abuse.
heraldscotland.com is tackling this problem by allowing only subscribers to comment.
We are doing this to improve the experience for our loyal readers and we believe it will reduce the ability of trolls and troublemakers, who occasionally find their way onto our site, to abuse our journalists and readers. We also hope it will help the comments section fulfil its promise as a part of Scotland's conversation with itself.
We are lucky at The Herald. We are read by an informed, educated readership who can add their knowledge and insights to our stories.
That is invaluable.
We are making the subscriber-only change to support our valued readers, who tell us they don't want the site cluttered up with irrelevant comments, untruths and abuse.
In the past, the journalist’s job was to collect and distribute information to the audience. Technology means that readers can shape a discussion. We look forward to hearing from you on heraldscotland.com
