Celtic defender Marvin Compper will look to engineer an exit from the Parkhead club in January but maintains that he will look to resurrect his career elsewhere.

The 33-year-old was signed in the transfer window last January but has played just one game for the club - a Scottish Cup tie against Morton last March.

The defender was injured in the club’s mid-winter training break in Dubai last January and has had a succession of injuries since then. However, the player has maintained that he is fit and available for selection but cannot get into the team.

"Unfortunately, I do not play much of a role with our manager and that's why I want to take a look around during the winter break,” he said. "Whether it will be in the Bundesliga, I do not know. I'm pretty open.

"Although I will be 34 in the summer, I still have a lot in the tank. Unfortunately, I can not show it at Celtic.

"Right now, it's about looking to where I can continue my career. In any case, I can still play for two more years.

"I just want to keep playing football elsewhere."

Compper recently worked for a German television broadcaster when Celtic hosted Leipzig in the Europa League at Celtic Park. The player is not expected to feature for the club before the window opens and he is free to go elsewhere but the enigmatic nature of the signing was raised at the club’s AGM this week when one shareholder asked for an explanation.

That prompted Celtic manager Brendan Rodgers to raise his hands and claim responsibility for the signing that has not worked out for either party.

"As the leader of the team I will always assume responsibility for every single player who comes in to the club,” he said. "Marvin was brought in at a time when I thought we needed experience to help us with the young centre halves we had. Unfortunately he came in January and within his first week picked up an injury.

"Really since that moment he has struggled for fitness. In that period other players have come in and performed well. So if you want to blame someone blame me as it is just one of those unfortunate things."
