Fan favourite Niko Matawalu marked his 100th appearance in style with two of Glasgow Warriors’ six tries at Scotstoun last night, but head coach Dave Rennie was still demanding more of his men following their 40-15 thrashing of Cardiff Blues.

His side had registered a bonus point with four tries before the break, but Rennie was unhappy with the way they let their opponents back into the match after it.

“I thought the first half was excellent, really clinical I thought we defended really well and bar the last few minutes where they drove a few lineouts they never really looked like scoring (but) I’m not very happy at all with the second half, especially defensively,” he said.

“We tackled poorly and some individuals made some poor defensive reads, which put us under a lot of pressure. We scrambled pretty well, but could well have conceded more points, so it’s disappointing but maybe not a bad thing, we’ve got to play Scarlets next week who we know are pretty good out wide and will challenge the edge and that was a pretty soft second half.”

His message to Matawalu was similar, praising his efforts but reminding him that there is more to the game than scoring tries, saying: “In our last match he got a hat-trick and there was a lot made of that but defensively he made some really poor decisions. Tonight he was really good, though and obviously a real handful. I thought he was going to pick up another hat-trick at one stage, which would have been pretty special.”
