GLENN MIDDLETON hopes the chance to work alongside former England star Jermain Defoe will help him take his game to the next level at Rangers.

The 19-year-old has enjoyed a terrific debut campaign in Light Blue as he has made the most of his chance to impress for Steven Gerrard’s side.

Middleton has made 25 appearances and scored five goals as he has competed with Ryan Kent, Daniel Candeias and Eros Grezda for a spot in the Gers attack.

And the winger is set to play a key role in the coming weeks and months as Gerrard sets his sights on the Premiership title and Scottish Cup this term.

The arrivals of Defoe and Steven Davis earlier this month have added further strength and experience to Rangers' ranks ahead of the run-in.

Now former Norwich City kid Middleton is determined to take on board every word of wisdom that he can as he strives for further improvement at Ibrox.

Middleton said: “It is very good to have a guy like Jermain Defoe in the team.

“I have been watching him in training and seeing his little movements when he receives the ball, before he gets a shot on goal. I can’t fail to learn from a guy like that.

“When I was Norwich I always enjoyed watching Tottenham and I loved him when he was there. Now he is here with me at Rangers it is incredible.

“When I heard he was signing for the club I was pretty excited to say the least. Everyone knows what he has done in the game and he has shown in training what he is capable of.

“Since he came in he has been really good with everyone. He has been in the game a long time and he knows how to treat people.

“Everyone in this team gets on really well, we have no prima donnas or anything. Everyone is open and we mix well together.

“I always liked to pick up tips from the more experienced guys in the team to make me better.

“At Norwich I used to speak to Steven Naismith and Russell Martin a lot, who were great with me.

“Here I speak to the likes of Gareth McAuley and Scott Arfield, guys who have been there and done it. If I can get advice from them, then I know it can help me in my own career.”
