Dundee United manager Robbie Neilson is facing a potential dugout ban after being charged with misconduct by the Scottish FA.

The notice of complaint is in relation to the March 9 Ladbrokes Championship defeat at Partick Thistle when the former Hearts head coach was sent to the stand by referee Alan Newlands during the half-time interval.

Speaking after the 2-1 defeat, Neilson, whose side closed the gap on leaders Ross County to eight points with victory over the Staggies on Tuesday, said: “The referee sent me to the stand at half time for allegedly saying something to him, which I didn't say.

“I think that has influenced him in his decision later on. I don't think he will look back on it with the greatest of happiness as what he was like today.”

Neilson was also furious that Newlands opted not to award a penalty when Jamie Robson was challenged by Miles Storey in the box in the 71st minute.

He said: “I think we can all agree it’s unbelievable and I have no idea what the referee’s doing.

“These decisions are big in the game and it’s one of the most blatant ones you’ll ever see in your life.

“I’m sure he’ll look at it and realise he’s had an absolute howler, which we can all see.”

Neilson has been charged with breaking rule 203: 'No member of Team Staff shall commit Misconduct’, at a match and has until tomorrow to respond to the SFA.

A principle hearing date has been set for April 11.
