CELTIC midfielder Callum McGregor reckons that he and his team-mates have a “relentless” will to win silverware that will help them get over the finishing line this season and secure the ‘treble Treble’. McGregor said: “You never know when it’s going to end, so you just keep going, foot to the floor, and you just be relentless with it.”

Former Rangers striker Mark Hateley has insisted that Steven Gerrard has raised standards at Ibrox since taking over, making the team a far more professional outfit. “We all work to a professionalism that is expected of Rangers and that has come through Steven and the way he operates, and the way that Mark Allen works,” said Hateley. “Everything is 100 per cent professional and to the highest standards.”

And Hateley is pleased with the way Rangers have progressed over the course of the season, both on and off the pitch. Hateley said: “I think on the park we are ahead of where we should be, and off it we have had to strengthen because of the demand that Steven Gerrard and his team have put on the business.”

Scotland and Manchester United are both reportedly interested in securing the services of Stoke City midfielder Darren Fletcher as part of their respective coaching teams. Manchester United are interested in offering their former player a role in the club’s recruitment department, while the Scottish FA are considering approaching Fletcher to be a member of the new manager’s coaching staff, once one is appointed.

As Scottish football continues to react to the news of Billy McNeill’s death, ex-Rangers captain Richard Gough has revealed that McNeill phoned him the day after the Ibrox club secured nine consecutive league titles to congratulate him. “One of the first calls I got the next day was from Billy,” said Gough. “He just said to me, ‘Richard, congratulations to you and Rangers. I didn’t think it would ever be achieved again’.”

Former Celtic and Liverpool striker Kenny Dalglish has credited McNeill with the “wonderful education” that sent him on the way to European glory. Dalglish said: “To spend time with the Celtic captain was a wonderful education and stood me in good stead for my professional career and also as a person.”

Ian Wright, who played for Celtic during the 1999/2000 campaign, has said that McNeill had a special aura around him that was apparent immediately. “When you look at what he’s done and the leadership qualities he showed, and being the first British man to lift the European Cup, then you can see it and feel it when he walks into the room,” said Wright.

And Celtic have asked Spanish club Athletic Bilbao to postpone McNeill’s ‘One Club Man’ award, which the Lisbon Lion was honoured with the week before his death. A statement from the Basque club read: “In the circumstances, the tribute to Billy McNeill will now go ahead at the San Mames before the match against Celta Vigo.”

Ex-Rangers midfielder Lee McCulloch reckons Jake Hastie will prove to be abargian signing for his former club. “Signing Jake Hastie is not a gamble,” McCulloch insisted. “It is a bit of a no-brainer to be honest.”

McCulloch believes that Rangers must finish the season strongly to build confidence going into next season. McCulloch said: “This is their chance to show that they are good enough and that they can put a run together against the top teams in the Premiership.”

And with one eye on tonight’s Scottish Youth Cup final, McCulloch said that Rangers’ youth players must follow Ross McCrorie’s example and progress to the first team.

Hearts midfielder Peter Haring - who has been one of the club’s best players this season - has been ruled out of this weekend’s Edinburgh derby with a pelvis complaint. Hearts boss Craig Levein said: “The issue is in his pelvic area and this process tends to work 99 times out of 100. Fingers crossed we will have him back for the Kilmarnock game.”

And Hearts will discover later today whether or not they and Aberdeen will face disciplinary action from the Scottish FA for the melee that occurred during the recent fixture between the two clubs.

Dundee defender Cammy Kerr has admitted that being one of the club’s supporters is particularly difficult at the moment, given the Taysiders dreadful run of form of late. “I am hurting as much as they are and being a Dundee fan is probably the hardest thing in the world at this moment in time,” said Kerr.

As the Championship approaches its conclusion and with more than half the teams in the division still battling relegation, Queen of the South striker Stephen Dobbie is adamant that he wants to have nothing to do with this season’s relegation play-offs. “Even though I would be confident for us to get through it, I believe getting safe would be the priority so we can go on holiday quicker,” admitted the veteran striker.

Partick Thistle striker Kris Doolan clocked up his 400th appearance for the club on Tuesday night against Ayr United, but insisted that there are still plenty more to come. “I’m not happy just to get to 400 and stop,” said the 33-year-old. “I’ll try and get as many games with this club as I can. It’s amazing how quickly a career in football can go past you.”

Following Kilmarnock manager Steve Clarke’s demand that referee Steven McLean should not officiate any more matches involving the Ayrshire club, Stewart Fisher is asking: If Rangers and Celtic can pick and choose their referees, then why not Kilmarnock?

And James Cairney has taken a look at Paul Heckingbottom’s impact at Hibernian, in a bid to see where things went wrong for his predecessor Neil Lennon at Easter Road.

In golf, 50-year-old Euan McIntosh has been included in the GB&I Walker Cup training squad.

And Scottish golfer Carly Booth has faced an online backlash after promoting a tie-in with Golf Saudi on her social media page. Brandel Chamblee, the former PGA Tour player and now a leading analyst on the Golf Channel, accused those competing of being “ventriloquists for an abhorrent regime”.

Elsewhere, the Daily Record are reporting that former England boss Sven-Goran Eriksson has contacted the Scottish FA about the vacant Scotland manager’s position.

And Frank Lampard’s Derby County are said to be interested in Hearts defender John Souttar, according to the Scottish Sun.
