ZDENEK ZLAMAL: Nothing to do in the first half but crazy decision to come out wide as Edouard ran through and clumsily took him out to gift Celtic a penalty and the equaliser. Should probably have saved penalty too, having got two hands to the ball. Well beaten by Edouard for Celtic’s second. 5
MICHAEL SMITH: Fascinating battle with Mikey Johnston and saw him off despite some good moments from the Celtic youngster, before taking on Sinclair with equal zeal. 7
JOHN SOUTTAR: Great last-ditch block on Edouard kept the score level in first half and the Scotland man stood up to the challenge posed by Edouard well. Posted missing though at Celtic’s second. 7
CHRISTOPHE BERRA: Heroic performance from the Hearts captain, who made some crucial interventions and got his head to almost everything that had been thrown into the area by Celtic. The one time he was caught out of position he was punished though, as Lustig’s header split the Hearts defence to allow Edouard to score. 7
AARON HICKEY: The 16-year-old was thrown in to face the player of the year Forrest and took to the occasion like a duck to water. Solid at the back, composed on the ball and always a willing outlet going forward. Brilliant. 8
SEAN CLARE: Closed the Celtic defence effectively and put in a good shift for the team, before showing admirable composure to backheel the ball into the path of Edwards to break the deadlock. Replaced by Wighton with 15 minutes to go. 7
PETER HARING: The starting point for Hearts’ attacks and an effective reader of the game in front of his defence too. Used the ball well and gave everything before being withdrawn with 10 minutes to go. 7
RYAN EDWARDS: Incredible tale as the once frozen-out Aussie came in from the cold to claim a cup final berth, and he ran himself into the ground for the cause before popping up with the fairytale opener. Incredible athlete. 8
ARNAUD DJOUM: Careless pass in first half allowed Celtic in for a great chance but was bailed out by Souttar. Grew into the game as it wore on and played a crucial role in opening goal. Booked for wild tackle on Hayes. 7
JAKE MULRANEY: Some good moments on the ball and managed to get to the byline on a few occasions and whip in the odd dangerous cross. Used his pace well and a real threat. 7
STEVEN MACLEAN: Led the line well, held the ball up and battled manfully against Kris Ajer and Jozo Simunovic before tiring late on and being replaced by Ikpeazu. 8
SUBSTITUTES:
CRAIG WIGHTON: On for Clare with 15 minutes left but couldn’t make much of an impact. 3
UCHE IKPEAZU: Big striker came on late having battled back to fitness but was well marshalled. 3
OLIVER BOZANIC: Couple of decent set-piece deliveries after coming on late in the game and got snapped into tackles. 4
Why are you making commenting on The Herald only available to subscribers?
It should have been a safe space for informed debate, somewhere for readers to discuss issues around the biggest stories of the day, but all too often the below the line comments on most websites have become bogged down by off-topic discussions and abuse.
heraldscotland.com is tackling this problem by allowing only subscribers to comment.
We are doing this to improve the experience for our loyal readers and we believe it will reduce the ability of trolls and troublemakers, who occasionally find their way onto our site, to abuse our journalists and readers. We also hope it will help the comments section fulfil its promise as a part of Scotland's conversation with itself.
We are lucky at The Herald. We are read by an informed, educated readership who can add their knowledge and insights to our stories.
That is invaluable.
We are making the subscriber-only change to support our valued readers, who tell us they don't want the site cluttered up with irrelevant comments, untruths and abuse.
In the past, the journalist’s job was to collect and distribute information to the audience. Technology means that readers can shape a discussion. We look forward to hearing from you on heraldscotland.com
