THERE are a number of exciting Scottish Premiership prospects that are worth getting excited about. With that in mind, we'll be revealing our top 10 players under 21 currently plying their trade in the top flight. In order to be considered, players have to be based in Scotland permanently and have to have a significant number of minutes under their belts this season. The likes of Karamoko Dembele at Celtic or Rangers' Dapo Mebude might go on to become stars, but it's still a little too early to say for sure. Without any further ado, here's our number 5...

It's been a funny old season for Rangers' Glenn Middleton. The left winger featured regularly in Steven Gerrard's side during the first half of the campaign but has found game time with the first team hard to come by since the turn of the year. Middleton joined the club from Norwich City in January 2018 and showed some glimpses of his potential towards the end of last year.

Middleton was thrown into the deep end early on by Gerrard, coming off the bench in the club's Europa League qualifiers and starting three group stage matches. The 19-year-old grabbed a goal and an assist away to Spartak Moscow and proved that he is capable of holding his own in the European football arena.

Domestically, Middleton has shown that he has all the right qualities to become an excellent winger in the future. The Rangers wide man has the third-highest rate of crossing in the Premiership, and excels at carrying the ball forward. Middleton averages 2.6 progressive runs - a dribble where the ball is carried at least 10 metres up the pitch - per 90 minutes. To put that figure into context, that's the same number as Scott Sinclair and more than Aberdeen' Gary Mackay-Steven manages.

With Jamie Murphy due to return from injury for next season, and Jordan Jones and Jake Hastie on their way to Ibrox, Middleton could well find first-team opportunities at Ibrox hard to come by in the near future. But the winger has shown that he has the ability and the potential to make it at Ibrox; it is now up to him to ensure that Gerrard does not forget about him.
