CELTIC won the second friendly game of their pre-season tour as goals from Leigh Griffiths and Vakoun Issouf Bayo edged out Wiener-Sport Club in Vienna.
The match was a much more competitive affair than the 6-1 rout of SC Pinkafeld on Wednesday night, but Celtic came from behind to claim the victory.
Celtic manager Neil Lennon handed a debut to Marian Shved, and the winger showed up well despite appearing a little too anxious to make an impression. Not everything he tried came off, but he looks to have pace and a trick or two up his sleeve on this brief showing. It was the man on the other wing, Mikey Johnston, that was particularly catching the eye though, coming close on a couple of occasions and bamboozling his opponent at full-back.
The game was goalless at the interval, but Celtic would have been scratching their heads at the fact they had failed to score, passing up a series of golden opportunities. James Forrest was the worst offender, following up a cracking shot which hit the bar with two howlers, heading wide of an open goal from six yards and then hitting the outside of the post when clean in on goal.
Celtic boss Lennon changed his entire outfield line-up for the second half, with Bayo up top with Griffiths. It was Griffiths who was next to fluff his lines, missing the ball completely when it was put on a plate by Scott Sinclair.
The hosts punished them for their profligacy after Kristoffer Ajer had committed a foul 30 yards out, and Jakov Josic - who had earlier forced Bain to tip a swerving effort over from even further out - rifled the ball into the net.
Celtic were level seconds later though, as Griffiths charged down a clearance from home keeper Patrick Kostner and rolled the ball home.
Kostner made up for his error when he spread himself well to deny Ewan Henderson after he was rolled in by Griffiths, managing to get a foot to the ball to divert the youngster's shot wide.
Griffiths them hung up a corner that Bayo should have converted, the striker getting a free run at the ball but heading wide under no pressure.
Bayo made amends though four minutes from time as he met Jonny Hayes' low cross and swept an emphatic finish into the bottom corner from 12 yards to give Celtic the win.
Why are you making commenting on The Herald only available to subscribers?
It should have been a safe space for informed debate, somewhere for readers to discuss issues around the biggest stories of the day, but all too often the below the line comments on most websites have become bogged down by off-topic discussions and abuse.
heraldscotland.com is tackling this problem by allowing only subscribers to comment.
We are doing this to improve the experience for our loyal readers and we believe it will reduce the ability of trolls and troublemakers, who occasionally find their way onto our site, to abuse our journalists and readers. We also hope it will help the comments section fulfil its promise as a part of Scotland's conversation with itself.
We are lucky at The Herald. We are read by an informed, educated readership who can add their knowledge and insights to our stories.
That is invaluable.
We are making the subscriber-only change to support our valued readers, who tell us they don't want the site cluttered up with irrelevant comments, untruths and abuse.
In the past, the journalist’s job was to collect and distribute information to the audience. Technology means that readers can shape a discussion. We look forward to hearing from you on heraldscotland.com
