KENNY MILLER is confident Jermain Defoe can fill the void left by Alfredo Morelos if the striker leaves Rangers this summer.
The Colombian has long been linked with a move away from Ibrox and the Light Blues board could see their resolve tested in the coming months.
Gers fans would be equally as upset to see captain James Tavernier head for the exit door ahead of Steven Gerrard’s second campaign as boss.
The loss of Morelos would be a significant blow to Rangers this summer but Miller believes Gerrard already has a ready-made replacement in his squad.
He said: “Alfredo's level of goals has been incredible and that was him missing games through suspension.
“Even at the end of the season he found himself on the bench so to get 30 goals was incredible.
“Of course, Rangers would like to keep both of them but the kind of figures that are being branded about, it would give them money to strengthen in other areas.
“I felt when Alfredo wasn't playing they missed him. But the flip side was at the end of the season where they looked to be functioning better when he wasn't in the team.
“You can't say that if he were to go Rangers would lack a goal threat because they've got Defoe there who's electric in and around the box.
“So if they got a real big offer for Alfredo, they've got someone – as you saw at the end of the season – who can carry that role in the team.
“Jermain can bring others into play and the Arfield goal against Celtic at Ibrox was an example of that. It was phenomenal from Defoe, the awareness to see Scotty's run.
“The cleverness to step over it was fantastic. The players looked to be on the save wavelength toward the end of the campaign, which was maybe missing at the start.”
Why are you making commenting on The Herald only available to subscribers?
It should have been a safe space for informed debate, somewhere for readers to discuss issues around the biggest stories of the day, but all too often the below the line comments on most websites have become bogged down by off-topic discussions and abuse.
heraldscotland.com is tackling this problem by allowing only subscribers to comment.
We are doing this to improve the experience for our loyal readers and we believe it will reduce the ability of trolls and troublemakers, who occasionally find their way onto our site, to abuse our journalists and readers. We also hope it will help the comments section fulfil its promise as a part of Scotland's conversation with itself.
We are lucky at The Herald. We are read by an informed, educated readership who can add their knowledge and insights to our stories.
That is invaluable.
We are making the subscriber-only change to support our valued readers, who tell us they don't want the site cluttered up with irrelevant comments, untruths and abuse.
In the past, the journalist’s job was to collect and distribute information to the audience. Technology means that readers can shape a discussion. We look forward to hearing from you on heraldscotland.com
