A NIGHT of significant firsts helped Hamilton Accies find safe passage beyond Clyde at Ochilview. A first goal in 106 games from defender Scott McMann sent them on their way, Blair Alston got off the mark with a maiden strike since his summer move from St Johnstone, before Lewis Smith (pictured) conjured up his first goal for the club he has supported since childhood.
Smith was the stand-out performer on the occasion of his first competitive outing and had been unfortunate not to score with one of two decent first-half chances.
His manager Brian Rice admitted afterwards that he is still experimenting with his options at this juncture but revealed the teenage Smith was someone who would have a decent chance of remaining in his plans when the league action gets under way next month.
“Young Smith got a goal he thoroughly deserved from his performance,” said the Hamilton boss. “I know the talent the boy has got. He’s been pushing at the door all pre-season and at the end of last season and this was an opportunity to get him playing. We saw what sort of player he could be. If he keeps working hard in training he’s got every chance of featuring more for us this season.”

With Broadwood out of commission due to ongoing renovation work, Ochilview provided the setting for Clyde’s first competitive match of the season. Manager Danny Lennon was happy with what he witnessed.
“I really enjoyed our first-half performance and if we can maintain that through the season then we’ll certainly set ourselves in good stead,” said the former St Mirren boss.
After a slow start, Hamilton grew into the game and underlined their dominance with the opening goal after 32 minutes as Ronan Hughes’ shot was blocked and McMann rolled in his first goal for Accies after a century of appearances.
Hamilton were now looking in control and a second goal arrived early in the second half. Again it was a landmark moment, Alston’s low driven effort his first since signing in the summer.
That seemed to settle matters but Clyde’s tenacious spirit saw them get a goal back after 57 minutes when Johnston crossed for Syvertsen to net.
That sparked the prospect of an equaliser and penalties until Smith enjoyed a moment to savour by drilling in a shot from the edge of the box.
