CFR Cluj sporting director Bogdan Mara reckons Dan Petrescu can raid Glasgow - just like he did with Unirea Urziceni.

Petrescu's charges defeated Maccabi Tel-Aviv 3-2 on aggregate following a breathless 2-2 draw in Israel on Tuesday, teeing up a Champions League third qualifying round showdown against Celtic.

Mara hailed the former Chelsea legend's game-plan as PERFECT and reckons they can spring another Romanian shock on Scottish soil.

Petrescu was in charge of the Unirea side that hammered Rangers 4-1 in the Champions League in 2009, with a Gers side including Pedro Mendes, Sasa Papac and David Weir were humiliated at Ibrox.

Mara, a title-winning legend from his own playing days at Unirea, hopes history repeats itself a decade later.

He said: “We know Celtic are a huge club but we are not afraid of anyone and believe we can take our chance to progress. I hope we can have the same outcome as when Unirea Urziceni played against Rangers!

“We have a lot of confidence now. We knew what we needed in Israel and Dan Petrescu knew exactly what to do. His tactics were perfect and the players carried out those instructions.

“It was a hellish atmosphere over there - the crowds were crazy and did not stop signing, cheering and supporting their team, so we can be proud to have progressed.”

Mara, meanwhile, heaped praise on Venezuela international attacker Mario Rondon whose pivotal goal in Israel ultimately saw Cluj progress.

He added: “Mario Rondon played very well and deserved to get a goal because he works so hard for the team. He is going to be a very big asset in the Celtic match and I’m sure he can cause them problems.”
