Stephen Dobbie insists he'd sacrifice his record-breaking goals tally - if it meant his Queen of the South side made the play-offs this season.

Former Hibs and Blackpool hitman Dobbie scored an incredible 43 goals in all competitions for the Doonhamers last term.

Yet he was left disappointed as the Dumfries club still languished near the bottom of the Scottish Championship and had to come through relegation play-offs to stay in the league.

This season, though, 36-year-old Dobbie admits he'd happily score LESS goals for Allan Johnston's side that's what it took to have success.

He said: "I always say at the end of any season my target is to better that the next year.

"Obviously the number of goals I scored last season, I'd definitely take some of them off my tally to get us up nearer the play-offs.

"It's going to be a challenge considering the amount of goals I did score last year.

"The team comes first, though. I want to get us up there at the end of the season."

Dobbie has made no secret of the fact that he's desperate to catapult Queens up the table this campaign.

But he knows the Championship can be a treacherous league.

And he admits that while he's hopeful of having a good year with his teammates, the turnaround of personnel for this term might take some getting used to.

He added: "Play-offs are the priority at the minute for most clubs, I'd think.

"The likes of Dundee, Dundee United will be favourites for the title, but the rest of us it'll be about trying to keep it going if we can get a decent start.

"There's been a few changes to the team this season and it's just about getting to know how each of us play.

"I need to get used to, for example, how Gary Oliver plays so I can link up with him. Same with Lewis Kidd, where he knows I'm going to make the runs and he can deliver the ball.

"It's still early and it's a long season."
