David Marshall

His first piece of action was a fingertip save to deny the dangerous Artem Dzyuba. Then made two even better saves in the second half. Had no chance at all with the goals. Marshall, poor lad, had had too many good games for his country and lost. 8

Stephen O’Donnell

This is a completely different level for any Kilmarnock player and this one showed up well. Good man. Russia goalkeeper Guilherme proved too big a lad when he denied the right back with an early close-range effort. A great run and cross almost brought an equaliser. Can be happy with his performance. He didn’t deserve the OG. 7

Liam Cooper

A debut for the Leeds United man and, you know, didn’t do a huge amount wrong against a level of player you simply don’t find in the English championship. Slightly unfortune to be booked when going for a high ball. Sure, mistakes were made but this is all new to him. 6

Charlie Mulgrew

One day he will be fully appreciated. The look he must have given Steve Clarke when the manager told him Dzyuba was his man for the night. Mulgrew was given the most difficult job and can be pleased with his he won header, made vital blocks – one after the break prevented a goal. If only his free kick had curled a smidgeon more. 7

Andy Robertson

Was having a good night until his bad touch set up Russia’s equaliser, and he even got a touch on Dzybua’s shot which helped it past Marshall. That was unlucky. Captain had a mixed night but showed for the ball and did get joy in attack in latter stages. 6

Scott McTominay

A good first half was followed by an error-strewn second 45, which isn’t to say the Manchester United man didn’t have good moments. A superb sliding block before half-time probably saved a goal and, like the team, there was good and bad. 6

John McGinn

For half an hour he was the best man on the pitch Took his goal well, got about the park and go on the ball. But as Russia took control, spent his evening chasing the ball. Still, it was a surprise to see him go off. 6

Callum McGregor

Didn’t do Fraser many favours with the ball he gave him which within 30 seconds was in the back of the Scotland net. Not as noticeable in an attacking sense and delivery at set-pieces must improve. Got more involved as the game wore on but passing was sloppy. 6

James Forrest

Took an extra touch and saw a cross blocked on 20 minutes when he had men to aim for. Worked back a lot, too much for his liking. Not his night and you could tell that early on. But the winger rather benefits from being on the ball. Subbed after an hour. 5

Oli McBurnie

Used his physicality to great effect and was as much of a nuisance as he could. Good with his feet as well and had a vital role in the goal. A smart dummy from a first half corner could have led to a second. Problems arose with his touch because he was the loneliest of lone strikers as time. Shattered at the end. 6

Ryan Fraser

Superb cross led to the first goal and kept at the Russians down the left wing. But a poor touch, albeit he was stretching, coughed up possession and then it was 2-1 to them. Fraser, when on the ball, caused problems. 6

Substitutes

Kenny McLean

Saw his name in lights when he took one a volley with 17 to go. Ach, he was well within his rights. 5

Ryan Christie

Was a revelation in his half hour or so. The first chance he got, the Celtic man played a one-two and got a shot on target. Great back-heel set-up an attack and was a bundle of energy. Celtic man should start against Belgium. 7

Matt Phillips

Was given 12 minutes to save the day. It was a lot to ask. 5
