He may be playing his football in the Scottish Championship but Lawrence Shankland had a Champions League winner singing his praises this evening.

An impressive showing on his Hampden Park debut for Scotland in a 6-0 rout of San Marino earned him his first international goal.

He's now scored 16 goals in 13 games this season so far for club and country and is on red-hot form.

And his performance didn't go unnoticed with former Scotland captain Darren Fletcher who was very complimentary of the Dundee United hitman after the game.

"Shankland would've felt he had to score tonight, especially against San Marino," Fletcher told Sky Sports.

"I was impressed by him all night, even though he only got one goal.

"His movement was good, he held it up and was patient.

"I think he showed he can be at this level and credit to him he didn't look out of place.

"He thoroughly deserved his goal for his performance."

Asked if he reckons Shankland will be back in the fold for the country's next double header in November, Fletcher added: "I think he'll definitely be in the squad, his performance tonight and I'm sure he showed it in training as well because his movement was fantastic.

"He came on in Russia and did well and, as a striker although he's a goal scorer, he didn't look like a selfish goal scorer.

"There were times he was laying it off for his teammates and that was fantastic to see."
