HERE’S how the Celtic players rated in their 2-1 win over Lazio:
FRASER FORSTER: Could do nothing about the Lazio goal as it was fizzed past him by an unmarked Ciro Immobile. Made a smart save shortly after Celtic’s equaliser and was then baled out by his defence after flapping at a corner. Made two crucial stops late on. 7
HATEM ELMAHED: Switched from usual right-back berth to form part of a three-man defence. Recovered from a shaky start to keep the Lazio forwards quiet. Went off late in the game after seeming to stretch his groin. 6
CHRISTOPHER JULLIEN: The match winner from the home game against the Italians was a regular threat again at Celtic set-plays. Did his bit at the back too, making a much-needed goal line clearance late in the first half. 7
KRISTOFFER AJER: Made a terrific intervention to deny Immobile a second goal midway through the first half. Almost turned goal creator in the second half with a goal line cut back that was cleared. 6
JAMES FORREST: Continues to enhance his reputation at this level with another goal that drew Celtic level. Strike atoned for the wing-back losing Immobile at Lazio’s opener. Also made the wrong choice in going alone at a counter attack with better options in the middle. 7
SCOTT BROWN: Predictably at the centre of things as Celtic gradually grew in confidence the longer the game wore on. Would have had his heart in his mouth as the referee raced over to pull out a card after his elbow on Jony but only yellow. 7
CALLUM McGREGOR: Picked up an early bloody nose in his 250th game for Celtic but soldiered on. Became increasingly influential after the break as Celtic started to put string passes together and get forward. 7
MOHAMED ELYOUNOUSSI: Played the perfect pass to Forrest that allowed Celtic to draw level late in first half. Ambitious shot early in the second half touched over for a corner. Ceaseless endeavour. 8
RYAN CHRISTIE: Relentless running again from the former Aberdeen man who put in tireless shift as he provided the link between defence and attack. Perfectly precise with his passing. 7
JONNY HAYES: Just a second start of the season for the Irishman who slotted in at left wing-back with Boli Bolingoli injured. Never stinted in effort and always willing to do the dogged defensive work too. 7
ODSONNE EDOUARD: Frenchman didn’t get a huge amount of service throughout the game and would have been cursing Forrest for not playing him in on the counter. Missed a golden chance when one on one but provided the perfect assist for the late winner. 7
Subs:
OLIVIER NTCHAM (for Christie 77): Match winner deep into injury time with a perfectly clipped finish. 7
NIR BITTON (for Elmahed 83): On for his injured compatriot and made a saving tackle. 3
MORITZ BAUER (for Forrest 89): Late appearance to shore up the defence. N/A
Why are you making commenting on The Herald only available to subscribers?
It should have been a safe space for informed debate, somewhere for readers to discuss issues around the biggest stories of the day, but all too often the below the line comments on most websites have become bogged down by off-topic discussions and abuse.
heraldscotland.com is tackling this problem by allowing only subscribers to comment.
We are doing this to improve the experience for our loyal readers and we believe it will reduce the ability of trolls and troublemakers, who occasionally find their way onto our site, to abuse our journalists and readers. We also hope it will help the comments section fulfil its promise as a part of Scotland's conversation with itself.
We are lucky at The Herald. We are read by an informed, educated readership who can add their knowledge and insights to our stories.
That is invaluable.
We are making the subscriber-only change to support our valued readers, who tell us they don't want the site cluttered up with irrelevant comments, untruths and abuse.
In the past, the journalist’s job was to collect and distribute information to the audience. Technology means that readers can shape a discussion. We look forward to hearing from you on heraldscotland.com
