NIKOLA KATIC is determined to make the most of his Ibrox chance and prove his worth to boss Steven Gerrard once again after returning to the heart of the Rangers defence.

The Croatian started the season well alongside Connor Goldson but has endured a difficult few weeks as Filip Helander has established himself in the starting line-up.

Katic now has an opportunity to put together a run of games as Rangers wait to discover the extent of the injury that kept Helander out of the Europa League draw with Young Boys on Thursday night.

The 23-year-old went through a similarly frustrating spell last season and will use those memories to help him come to the fore over the next few weeks.

Katic said: "It was difficult. I can’t say I was happy. I was disappointed. I want to play football. That’s the only thing that matters.

"I started this season playing well but it is professional football with a big squad and a lot of games.

"Filip came in and took his chance. Connor played well too. So I had to wait for my chance. Now I have a chance again to prove myself and I’m ready for that.

"We had a conversation. He (Gerrard) was honest with me about how things were going. He said just to keep pushing every day and try to do what he expects from me, try to be what kind of defender he wants me to be.

"And just wait for my chance. I agree with him. Connor and Filip have played really well.

"I would like to keep that (what Gerrard has said) for myself but he wants his defenders to be leaders who put their body on the line and help the team to keep a clean sheet.

"If you can go into the other box and score a goal that’s a plus but the main thing is to help your keeper and your defensive teammates to keep a clean sheet.

"It’s the same level of disappointment but it’s been easier because I went through this last season and came back again. This year, I knew I had to work hard and just be ready because the chance would come."
