HIBERNIAN last night pledged to take action against the yobs who threw bottles and other missiles at Rangers players at Easter Road last night.

Ibrox striker Jermain Defoe and right back Borna Barisic were both targeted in a game Steven Gerrard's side won 3-0.

The Edinburgh club, who introduced increased safety measures after similar incidents in games against Celtic and Rangers last season, pledged to identify the culprits.

A Hibs statement read: “We are naturally disappointed at the actions of a few, particularly as we appealed for supporters to behave responsibly on the eve of the game.

"We invested significantly in enhanced CCTV systems and we’ll review footage from all of the sections concerned to identify any individual involved in unacceptable conduct.”

Jack Ross, the Hibs manager, expressed his disgust at Barisic having a glass vodka bottle thrown at him as he lay on the pitch after being fouled by rival centre half Ryan Porteous.

"The one thing I would say, and I’m answering this as a human being rather than a football manager, is that I can’t quite get my head around why anyone would make the decision to throw a glass bottle at another human being," he said. "I just don’t get it. And I don’t understand it.

"There are a couple of different aspects to that. There are people who argue that behaviours on the pitch or around the pitch affect that. That’s garbage, an excuse. Someone who does that deserves the consequences that come with it. Because to throw the bottle is a ridiculous decision."

Ross admitted that Porteous deserved to be red carded for his challenge on Barisic.

"It’s an error of judgement from him, but I am not going to hang him out to dry because he is a young man," he said. "People say young men make mistakes. You make mistakes all through your life and your career.

"It’s how you react and learn from them, that will be the key thing for Ryan. It about how he reacts because it obviously left us in an even more difficult position in the game."
