ALISHA REES had vowed to do better than second ahead of the SPAR British Athletics Indoor Championships but that was exactly the fate that befell the Aberdeenshire sprinter.
The 20-year-old has twice in the past month claimed a Scottish indoor record over 60m and had designs on adding a British gold to her growing list of achievements.
Instead, she had to settle for silver with a time of 7.49 seconds as 17-year-old Amy Hunt flew past her to win her first senior championship medal after running 7.39.
“It’s great to get my first British medal but you come in wanting to win,” said Rees. “I feel a bit bad now and probably should have looked a bit happier when I was getting my medal. I am happy to get a silver but you want to win. It’s a learning experience.”
There was a bronze medal for Courtney Maguire who cleared 4.00m in the pole vault to finish behind champion Sophie Cook.
“I'm delighted to have won a medal in front of a home crowd,” she said. “It was great to pull off a good performance in the end.
“It's quite nice being able to compete against the people you train with every day. We're all cheering each other on and it's great to see my training partners win medals also.”
There was disappointment for Heather Paton in the 60m hurdles final. The Scot looked strong in her heat but struck a hurdle early in the final and wasn’t able to complete the race.
There was better news late in the day for Grant Prenderleith, the Falkirk athlete storming through on the inside to claim his place in this afternoon’s 400m final.
