Daniel Stendel's Hearts future is up in the air after reconstruction talks failed earlier today.

The German boss is under contract at Tynecastle until 2022 however his terms are understood to only apply to life in the Premiership.

The SPFL confirmed earlier this afternoon in a statement that, following a vote among member clubs, a line would be drawn under reconstruction after it failed to secure the support it needed from at least 11 of the 12 Premiership clubs and over 75 per cent of the total 42 clubs. Just 16 of the 42 professional clubs in Scotland voted in favour of plans.

Hearts chief Ann Budge confirmed later that the club would be launching legal action against their relegation but it is not yet known whether Stendel will be in charge come the beginning of the new season, whenever that may be.

There is now serious uncertainty over the German's future. Stendel's agent Timo Rodewald previously confirmed to Herald and Times Sport that his client's future depended on where the Jambos would play their football next term. And he hinted that his career could lie away from Edinburgh should Ms Budge's talks break down.

"There's a lot of uncertainty for Daniel's personal future because he has a contract until 2022," Rodewald said. "As long as there's not a final decision about reconstruction or whether Hearts stay in the Premiership, we cannot do anything but wait.

"If I had another club interested in signing him and then in three weeks Ann was successful, he would still be under contract. He's not looking desperately for other clubs but it does make it uncertain."
