STEVEN GERRARD has always seen something in Brandon Barker. Now he hopes the player himself will show supporters what he is all about at Rangers this term.
There were few occasions last season where Barker was able to influence matches or look like he could become a mainstay of Gerrard's side but recent weeks have given him a fresh lease of life and another chance to impress at Ibrox.
With Joe Aribo set to be sidelined for another month at least, Barker's run of three consecutive appearances need not end soon as he prepares for the Premiership visit of Dundee United this afternoon.
Gerrard said: “Have I had a word with him? I think he has had a word with himself. It has taken him time to settle, coming from Manchester to Glasgow. He now has his partner up with him and he is more settled off the pitch.
"He is playing with a smile and there are signs we are starting to see the real Brandon Barker. I think there are still signs that there is more to come but he is working hard, playing with a smile and he is really enjoying playing with Ryan and the other players around him.
"He also has a licence to go and express himself. We have given him the platform because we know there is a big, big talent there and it is up to Brandon to go and find his best and most consistent level. He has to do whatever he can to stay in the team.”
Why are you making commenting on The Herald only available to subscribers?
It should have been a safe space for informed debate, somewhere for readers to discuss issues around the biggest stories of the day, but all too often the below the line comments on most websites have become bogged down by off-topic discussions and abuse.
heraldscotland.com is tackling this problem by allowing only subscribers to comment.
We are doing this to improve the experience for our loyal readers and we believe it will reduce the ability of trolls and troublemakers, who occasionally find their way onto our site, to abuse our journalists and readers. We also hope it will help the comments section fulfil its promise as a part of Scotland's conversation with itself.
We are lucky at The Herald. We are read by an informed, educated readership who can add their knowledge and insights to our stories.
That is invaluable.
We are making the subscriber-only change to support our valued readers, who tell us they don't want the site cluttered up with irrelevant comments, untruths and abuse.
In the past, the journalist’s job was to collect and distribute information to the audience. Technology means that readers can shape a discussion. We look forward to hearing from you on heraldscotland.com
