Dan Evans was comprehensively beaten by second seed Stefanos Tsitsipas in the first round of the Hamburg European Open.

It was a very difficult draw for the British number one and he was on court for just 59 minutes in a 6-3 6-1 loss to the Greek.

Clay is by far Evans’ weakest surface and he will head to the French Open, which begins on Sunday, having not won a match on it since last spring.

A poor service game from the 30-year-old at 2-1 in the first set gave Tsitsipas the crucial break.

Evans had his only break point in the second game of the second set but could not take it and six games in a row for Tsitsipas saw him race to the finish line inside an hour.

The second seed will take on Uruguayan Pablo Cuevas in the second round.
