Rangers have been dealt a blow over their potential signing of Preston's Daniel Johnson - as manager Alex Neil reckons he'll remain at Deepdale beyond the end of the transfer window.

The window closes this evening and Gers' long-term summer target is expected to remain at Preston. Steven Gerrard is hopeful of strengthening his side and has been on the look out for a top midfield player to add to his ranks.

Johnson has been the prime target, but Neil is '99 percent' sure his player - who scored 12 goals in 34 appearances last term - will stay.

He said: "What I do envisage is, if anybody does happen to leave then certainly we would need to replace, dependent on who it was. But at the moment, I think it's a 99% chance that won't happen.

"Everybody at every club has got a price on their head - if someone comes up with big money and it'll need to be big money, then obviously we'd need to replace.

"But I've got absolutely no appetite whatsoever to sell anyone."

Rangers could return to the table with an offer for former target Bongani Zungu. The South African has refused to sign a new deal with Amiens and could be available.
