Charlton boss Lee Bowyer hopes Celtic target Alfie Doughty will reconsider signing a new contract with the Addicks.

The left-sided player has thus far refused to discuss any new deal at The Valley, understood to be willing to sign a pre-contract with the Hoops in January after three failed bids from Celtic to sign the player this summer.

Bowyer has always insisted Doughty should stay and continue his development in League One, and now he hopes the defender will put pen to paper on a new deal to keep him down south. "We’ve just got to see where we’re at with Alfie and his agent but we’re hopeful that we can get something done there," Bowyer said. "Like I’ve said before, this is the right place for him to be at the moment – especially with his injury as well now.

"He needs to focus on just getting back and having that security behind him, I think. Hopefully we can get that one done."

We told recently how Doughty faces a lengthy spell on the sidelines after picking up a serious hamstring injury. Bowyer confirmed as much back in October, saying: "It doesn’t look good at all. I’m not going to go into too much detail but from what I understand, he’s going to be out for a while.

"I don’t know how long but it’s not good. Obviously, he was running flat out in the game on the weekend and someone nudged him in the back. It’s quite similar to that Stephy Mavididi. Do you remember when Stephy was here and the fella gave him a nudge from behind.

"He ended up doing his hamstring then. It’s quite similar to that, he was in his full stride and the fella has nudged him. His body tried to adjust and that’s how he’s done it."
