RANGERS midfielder Scott Arfield last night targeted top spot in Group D and a place among the seeds in the Europa League last 32 draw after scoring the goal that clinched a place in the knockout rounds.

Arfield buried a Ryan Kent cut back in the second-half of the match against Standard Liege at Ibrox to ensure that Steven Gerrard’s team, who had been behind twice in the first-half, ran out 3-2 victors.

However, the Canadian internationalist immediately set his sights on beating Lech Poznan in their final game in Poland next week - so the Glasgow club can finish above Benfica in their section.

“We have got one more game against Poznan,” he said. “This is a game that we feel we can go and win again. We felt as though we could win the group and we will continue to think like that. Next week is massive game for us.”

Arfield admitted the match against their Belgian rivals, who went 1-0 and 2-1 ahead in the opening 45 minutes, had been tough, but argued that Rangers had deserved the triumph.

“In Europe you go in with a game plan, but they can flip it because the calibre of player is so good,” he said. “But I feel as if we dominated the second-half. They had minimal chances.

“There are going to be numerous times this season when things will not go for you – decisions will go against you, goals will go against you. It is about how you come back from that. I think we showed tonight what a good team we are.

“I am loving it. Football is the greatest gift that anybody has given me. Any time I can go on the football pitch and play, particularly for a club this size and on nights like this, it is great. They are very memorable.”
