Kris Boyd has urged Rangers to tie down key performers Allan McGregor and Steven Davis on new deals - and strengthen with new signings this summer to ensure they do not 'stand still’ like Celtic.

The Ibrox outfit completed their sensational march to the Premiership title at the weekend but Boyd believes his old club’s recruitment is now ‘massive’ ahead of next term.

Boyd insists the Light Blues have to avoid the lack of progress that cost rivals Celtic their dream 10 in a row and has backed Steven Gerrard and sporting director Ross Wilson to get things right off the pitch.

But the 37-year-old reckons keeping hold of McGregor and Davis - who are out of contract in the summer, along with Leon Balogun, Jermain Defoe and Greg Stewart - should be high on the priority list.

He said: “The recruitment, once again, will be crucial in the summer.

“You don’t want to stand still - that’s exactly what Celtic did last summer.

“For me, they’ve got to bring in better players than what’s there, and that’s not having a go at the guys who are there.

“To keep going forward, to keep striving, you’ve got to turn up in pre-season with that feeling in your belly of ‘you know what, I’m not a guaranteed starter this season’.

“You get better performances out of people that way.

“And I’m sure that Steven Gerrard will already have identified a lot of talent. Him and Ross Wilson will have sat down and tried to work out what the best way is to take this club forward.”

Boyd added to Sky Sports: “There are some players in there who are out of contract - Allan McGregor, Steven Davis - and it’s important, I think, the club get them tied down.

“They have been crucial to everything Rangers have done this season, along with a few others.

“But it’s very, very important that you don’t stand still and you come back to win things.

“The recruitment in the summer is massive, to take Rangers on and consolidate that level of performance - or up it - and go again next season.”
