Ryan Jack pulled out the Scotland squad due to an ongoing injury that has plagued his season at Rangers.
The midfielder has not featured for his club since mid-February when he played against Dundee United. He missed both Europa League last-16 legs against Slavia Prague as well as games against Royal Antwerp in the previous round and last week's derby draw away to Celtic.
He was yesterday forced to withdraw from Scotland's squad for upcoming World Cup qualifiers against Austria, Faroe Islands and Israel, and boss Steve Clarke has revealed he knew even before picking the Gers man that he may not see the games through.
"We lost Ryan Jack but we sort of pre-empted that so we are in good shape,” Clarke said. "It is a blow for us because he has done well for us and he plays a certain position in midfield that without him we don’t really have.
“So we will miss him but we have got a really good squad now so time for someone else to step forward.
“The little time we have had on the training pitch has been really good work, high quality so hopefully we can take that on to the pitch. In my head, I know the team.”
It is not yet known whether Clarke will call-up a replacement for Jack, with the likes of Celtic's David Turnbull, Chelsea's Billy Gilmour and Ryan Gauld of Farense in Portugal all viable options.
Why are you making commenting on The Herald only available to subscribers?
It should have been a safe space for informed debate, somewhere for readers to discuss issues around the biggest stories of the day, but all too often the below the line comments on most websites have become bogged down by off-topic discussions and abuse.
heraldscotland.com is tackling this problem by allowing only subscribers to comment.
We are doing this to improve the experience for our loyal readers and we believe it will reduce the ability of trolls and troublemakers, who occasionally find their way onto our site, to abuse our journalists and readers. We also hope it will help the comments section fulfil its promise as a part of Scotland's conversation with itself.
We are lucky at The Herald. We are read by an informed, educated readership who can add their knowledge and insights to our stories.
That is invaluable.
We are making the subscriber-only change to support our valued readers, who tell us they don't want the site cluttered up with irrelevant comments, untruths and abuse.
In the past, the journalist’s job was to collect and distribute information to the audience. Technology means that readers can shape a discussion. We look forward to hearing from you on heraldscotland.com
