ALAN STUBBS says that Celtic and Rangers would be on the same level as Manchester United within just a few years if they were to join a British Super League.
On the back of the collapse of the proposed European Super League this week, reports yesterday suggested that the English Premier League were considering a revamp of their own competition, which would include an invite for the Glasgow clubs to participate.
For former Celtic and Everton defender Stubbs, such a move would be hugely exciting for supporters north and south of the border, and he would have no fears about the ability of the Old Firm to eventually adapt to the higher level.
“It would take them a few years to adjust but they would be brilliant in England,” Stubbs said.
“They would attract players, revenue and all the things associated with the glamour of being part of a British league.
“I think Celtic and Rangers would be an absolutely fantastic addition and I’d love to see it happen.
“You’ve seen in the last week how difficult change can be but I don’t know if it would be different if it’s just bringing in Celtic and Rangers.
“There are a lot of obstacles and dilemmas in the mix. It would certainly suit Celtic and Rangers more than some others. But I just think it would be brilliant and would add such excitement in to the mix.
“They would be a force to be reckoned with within a few years – they would scare some people down there.
“It’s difficult to compare them to clubs like Man Utd right now, because they have become what they are because they have been successful in the Premier League over a number of years.
“They’ve build their brands worldwide and you just need to look at what they are worth on the stock market – it’s astronomical.
“If Celtic and Rangers were to go in to that environment their brands –and buying power – would go through the roof. It won’t be long before they were along the same lines as Man Utd.
“You look at a lot of the clubs at the top of the Premier League right now, in terms of histories they are fairly new. You look at Man City since they were bought over, Chelsea are the same, it’s all quite recent.
“Arsenal, Man Utd and Liverpool have a history. But Celtic and Rangers would be so appealing do to their fans, they would attract major investment and it would be inevitable they’d ultimately be challenging in the upper echelons of a British league.”

Why are you making commenting on The Herald only available to subscribers?
It should have been a safe space for informed debate, somewhere for readers to discuss issues around the biggest stories of the day, but all too often the below the line comments on most websites have become bogged down by off-topic discussions and abuse.
heraldscotland.com is tackling this problem by allowing only subscribers to comment.
We are doing this to improve the experience for our loyal readers and we believe it will reduce the ability of trolls and troublemakers, who occasionally find their way onto our site, to abuse our journalists and readers. We also hope it will help the comments section fulfil its promise as a part of Scotland's conversation with itself.
We are lucky at The Herald. We are read by an informed, educated readership who can add their knowledge and insights to our stories.
That is invaluable.
We are making the subscriber-only change to support our valued readers, who tell us they don't want the site cluttered up with irrelevant comments, untruths and abuse.
In the past, the journalist’s job was to collect and distribute information to the audience. Technology means that readers can shape a discussion. We look forward to hearing from you on heraldscotland.com
