John Barnes believes both Celtic and Rangers would jump at the chance to join a British Super League if the opportunity came around.

Reports yesterday suggested that the Premier League's big six have discussed the possibilty of a reform that would include Glasgow's big two.

Barnes has revealed that the Hoops were in discussions to breakaway from the Scottish leagues while he was in charge back in the 1999/00 season.

And he still reckons they would jump ship along with their city rivals if they had the chance.

He told BonusCodeBets: “Back when I was Celtic manager, there was talk of Rangers and Celtic breaking away from the Scottish league with a North Atlantic League.

"Unfortunately, as the Premier League, Bundesliga and La Liga was so strong, they were talking about a separate North Atlantic league, that included a couple of Dutch teams, Portuguese teams, Celtic and Rangers, so the second-tier leagues in Europe, who wanted to breakaway and form another league, could get more money.

"It is sad to say because Scottish football wouldn’t be there without Celtic and Rangers, but if they were offered a chance [at a profitable international league], they would likely take it.”
