NEVER meet your heroes, the old saying goes.

But for schoolboys Stephen Roberts and Hugh McFadyen, getting the chance to meet former Scotland and Celtic skipper Danny McGrain was something they were never going to refuse.

The two pupils from St Roch’s Secondary were taking part in a week’s football coaching along with 100 other young people, and they were judged ‘top boys’ at the end of the session.

It was organised by the National Playing Fields Association and held at Crownpoint Sports Centre more than 20 years ago, in September 1990.

McGrain was one of the so-called ‘Quality Street Gang’, the great Celtic reserve team which also included players such as Kenny Dalglish, Lou Macari, Davie Hay and George Connelly.

In 2002, Celtic supporters voted for what they considered to be the greatest Celtic XI of all time, and McGrain was voted into the team, alongside other Parkhead greats such as Paul McStay, Kenny Dalglish and Henrik Larsson.
