Motherwell are rewarding supporters who signed up for a season ticket last term by allowing them to renew for free this season.

The Steel Men are paying their fans back for Covid-enforced closed door matches this season.

The club confirmed in a statement that fans who bought a ticket last season will have theirs renewed ahead of next season for free.

The brilliant gesture was met with delight on social media earlier this afternoon. They wrote: "Now more than ever, we're standing together. If you bought a 2020/21 season ticket, we're giving you a free one for 2021/22. See you back home soon."

'Well also confirmed they are offering season ticket refunds until the end of May as they thanked fans for splashing out on tickets at the beginning of this campaign despite uncertainty.

On their club website they went into more detail. "At the start of the 2020/21 season, we pledged to season ticket holders that they would see – in person – 19 Premiership matches at Fir Park in return for their purchase," a statement read.

"At that time, we were confident that supporters would be back home at some stage in the campaign, even as early as the autumn. Now, as we know, that never happened, and we have played every match behind closed doors.

"Despite that, our commitment remains unchanged. If you bought a season ticket for 2020/21, we will automatically give you a season ticket for 2021/22 for free. You do not need to spend any more money. We will honour our pledge and send you a new season card soon.

"We will forever be grateful for your decision to spend money last year when there was no certainty over what would happen next. We are incredibly appreciative, considering many of you will have been going through difficult times, worrying about your health, your family and perhaps even your job. We want to repay your faith by welcoming you back to Fir Park at no extra cost.

"We are also mindful that some of you may need the money back from your season ticket. We are offering refunds on season tickets until the end of May. Just email us at tickets@motherwellfc.co.uk, or call 01698 333333, and we’ll sort it for you right away."

Motherwell also revealed they are launching a new scheme which will allow fans to make a donation towards briefs for fans who are unemployed or low-income families.

They added: "A lot of fans have also approached us about making further donations to the club. In recognition of that, we are asking you to consider donating to our Community Trust and help us continue the excellent work they’ve done over the last year.

"In addition, we are launching our Well In scheme, inviting you to make a donation towards season tickets for unemployed persons and low-income families in our area. We are thankful to everyone who would consider such a gesture, and it is possible to do so by visiting donate.motherwellfc.co.uk.

"If you didn’t buy a season ticket in 2020/21 but want to now, we’d be delighted to welcome you back for the new campaign. Season tickets are now on sale – just go to tickets.motherwellfc.co.uk to buy. We’ve frozen our prices from last year, and we’re still offering the great incentive of up to two free season tickets for kids.

"At the time of writing, we know that restrictions on large outdoor gatherings will begin to ease on Monday 17 May.

"We are encouraged by the Scottish Government’s decision to allow 25% of Hampden Park to be open for the UEFA Euro 2020 matches in June. We hope to be able to update you all soon on plans for opening the gates here in time for the Premier Sports Cup group stages in July and the start of the Premiership campaign soon after.

"Until then, thank you. Stay safe and look after each other. Soon, we’ll be back home cheering on our team. Hold on to those thoughts of returning to your seat, being reunited with family and friends and seeing your team again. It’s coming."

Fans beamed at the news. One wrote: "That’s an actually astonishingly amazing gesture especially considering the club must’ve made losses due to no crowds. Fair play Motherwell Football Club". Another added: "Greeting.... THIS IS BETTER THAN ANY SUPER LEAGUE!!! Football for the community!! Well done @Alan_Burrows, staff and players..... this is my team".

One wrote: "I can’t tell you how many times my wee club leaves me astonished. This is an incredible gesture". A fourth commented: "Absolutely outstanding from Motherwell, great gesture to their fans, other clubs should take note and recognise the value of their support".
