DAVID GRAY says he would be more than happy to relinquish his status as the only living person to have captained Hibs to the Scottish Cup.

The defender famously ended the Easter Road club’s 114-year wait to lift the trophy when his late header sunk Rangers in a thriller in 2016.

Hibs return to Hampden this weekend as favourites to get past St Johnstone in the final.

Gray will likely be a sub on Saturday but insists he would be delighted if Paul Hanlon ends up getting his hands on the cup come full-time.

He said: “I'm in a fortunate position as the last Hibs captain to lift the Scottish Cup.

“But I'm hoping it's like buses - we've waited that long for the cup and if another one comes along that would be great.

“Every single season we set out the challenges and objectives and targets, which was to finish in Europe and win a cup, and we've actually got the chance to do that again, which is fantastic.

“The first part of it is done by finishing third in the league, which is a fantastic achievement and one I think we fully deserve.

“Hopefully we can then take that confidence from the season going on into the final: one final push and it'll be the cherry on top of the cake if we can put in a good performance and lift that cup again.”

Such was the wait for that famous Scottish Cup win, Gray admits it is still spoken about any time he runs into Hibs supporters.

He added: “The 2016 final obviously crops up a lot. It's something I'm very proud of and I'm privileged to have been in that position.

“I say it all the time but as long as I'm still playing and all the boys that were involved that they are still playing I don't know if we'll really understand the magnitude, what it means, and everything else that comes along with it.

“It will probably be once we stop playing and look back that we'll realise just what we did.

“But at the same time, I'd love to add another one to it. While we're still playing we're hungry to do that.

“The good thing we can do this week is pass our knowledge from having done it before to the boys who haven't not done it and hopefully get everybody in a good place to make sure we are as prepared as possible.

“This weekend will be no different. We are under no illusion that this is going to be a very difficult game.

“St Johnstone have been a fantastic team all season; one that has been very good against us as well so it's going to be very difficult.

“It's one we know we need to be at the top of our game to make sure we win, and St Johnstone will be going into the game thinking the same thing.

“We just need to make sure everyone is prepared as well as we possibly can be.

“It's one final push towards the end of the season and hopefully it can be one of the greatest seasons that Hibs have actually produced over the years, which is credit to the boys and the staff and everybody involved, especially what's going on in the world at the minute.

“With the challenges everybody's facing, it'd be a real fitting way for us to finish on a high point.”
