Celtic let Andy Robertson leave as a 15-year-old but Celtic have never left Robertson.
A boyhood fan of the club, the Scotland captain has admitted he would love to play for Celtic before he hangs up his boots but has insisted he would never want to be an empty jersey.
His primary ambition is to see out his career at Anfield but has conceded that it may not transpire that way. If he was to go elsewhere, Celtic would be his wish – but only if he felt he genuinely still had something to offer.
“My aim is to finish my career at Liverpool but I know how tough it is to stay at the highest level,” he said. “I would love to play for Celtic. When I was a young boy growing up I used to say I would give my best years to Celtic so I don’t want to go there when I am old and maybe can’t move as much and I get all my mates hating on because I can’t perform the way I used to.
“The time will come to make that decision but I have a good length of time on my Liverpool contract.
“I would love to pull on the Celtic shirt, of course I would. But I don’t want to be an old fart when I go up there. I want to still be able to play well and if I can’t I don’t want my mates hating on me!”
Why are you making commenting on The Herald only available to subscribers?
It should have been a safe space for informed debate, somewhere for readers to discuss issues around the biggest stories of the day, but all too often the below the line comments on most websites have become bogged down by off-topic discussions and abuse.
heraldscotland.com is tackling this problem by allowing only subscribers to comment.
We are doing this to improve the experience for our loyal readers and we believe it will reduce the ability of trolls and troublemakers, who occasionally find their way onto our site, to abuse our journalists and readers. We also hope it will help the comments section fulfil its promise as a part of Scotland's conversation with itself.
We are lucky at The Herald. We are read by an informed, educated readership who can add their knowledge and insights to our stories.
That is invaluable.
We are making the subscriber-only change to support our valued readers, who tell us they don't want the site cluttered up with irrelevant comments, untruths and abuse.
In the past, the journalist’s job was to collect and distribute information to the audience. Technology means that readers can shape a discussion. We look forward to hearing from you on heraldscotland.com
