There will at least be one Colombian on the pitch at Ibrox on Saturday, although not the player the Rangers fans hoped to see.

Cristian Montano is the latest player from South America to grace the Scottish game.

And having kept an eye on how well Rangers striker Alfredo Morelos has done, the 29-year-old has designs on being just as successful with the Lions.

The winger, who moved to London at the age of ten before joining the West Ham academy, signed a two-year deal with the West Lothian outfit from Port Vale earlier this summer.

A league curtain raiser at Rangers on Saturday would normally have presented the ideal chance for him to acquaint himself with his compatriot.

However, Morelos is still enjoying some down time after representing Colombia at Copa America and the pair are unlikely to go head-to-head in the televised lunchtime clash.

Nonetheless, Montano is still planning to become the next player from their country to shine in the top-flight.

“When your fellow countrymen are doing well you always keep an eye on them,” he said.

“He’s a goal scorer but I’ve always focussed on my own game and own team-mates.

“To be fair one of my friends is his best friend. When I was playing back in England he told me he used to go and see him and all these things.

“I’ve never met him before but he’s doing well so I’m happy for him.

“I want to be the next Colombian to do well in Scotland, that’s my goal.

“It’s my first time up in Scotland.

“I’m grateful for the opportunity the manager and the staff have given me.

"Hopefully I can do as well as he has, but for this club.”

The Lions are the visitors for flag day at Ibrox next Saturday lunch-time but Montano insists a trip to the champions will not faze him nor Livingston.

The 29-year-old, who has also played for Oldham and Bristol Rovers, said: “It’s not a bad game to start with, Rangers, champions last season.

“But it’s a new season. We’ll go there and enjoy ourselves - the pressure is on them.

“We’ve got to go there and enjoy ourselves and have fun and play our football.

“You never know what could happen, you could cause an upset. "They’re a good team but I focus on us really.

“You have to give respect to them, they’re the champions of Scotland but it’s more about us and how we will impose our game on them.”

Montano made his third appearance in a Livingston jersey as Davie Martindale’s side squeezed through to the Premier Sports Cup last-16 as one of three best runners up with Saturday’s 3-1 win over Cowdenbeath.

Liam Buchanan put the visitors ahead before Livingston earned victory through a Jamie Todd own goal and Bruce Anderson and Craig Sibbald strikes.

Montano has settled well so far and insists playing for a manager as demanding as Martindale can bring out the best in him.

He added: “I’m enjoying it here and it’s a lot different to what I’m used to but everyone at the club has been first class.

“It’s different in many ways: the professionalism, the way things are done, training sessions - it’s all different and it’s all about the standards that are required to play for this football club.

“It’s something as a professional footballer you want to have. It’s a challenge I’ve taken on and enjoying.

“It’s good the manager puts demands on you. It’s something you need, you need to be demanding and as a player you have to look forward to playing under managers like that, who want you to do well and constantly improve.”
