TOM ROGIC’S delightful pass to set up Joao Jota for Celtic’s opening goal against Motherwell on Saturday was a joy to behold, and Callum McGregor had the best view in the house.

The moment of magic from the Wizard of Oz was symptomatic of the fine season he is having to date under Ange Postecoglou, and the Celtic captain has been as blown away as anyone by the consistency of his midfield partner.

And as long as Rogic can stay fit and continue to show such form, McGregor believes they will have a chance of beating anyone.

“Tom’s a top player and he’s on fire right now for us,” McGregor said.

“The way he handles the ball, he’s definitely something special in terms of breaking the lines with his passes and receiving the ball.

“Long may his form continue. As long as we have a fit Tom Rogic playing that way we’ve always got a chance of winning games.”

Certainly, McGregor rates Celtic’s chances of getting a victory this afternoon against Ferencvaros, even though the novelty of the 3.30pm weekday kick-off will be something of a break from the usual routine.

“I probably wouldn’t long be in [normally],” said McGregor. “Maybe making a coffee and a bit of Homes Under The Hammer or something like that.

“That’s something completely different and unusual for everyone involved in the game. It’ll be like a weekend game kicking off at that time but the preparation has been good, we understand what the fixture is and what we need to do.

“We’re fully focused on that and when we turn up to the stadium there will be a buzz about the place and we’ll be ready to get going.

“We have to try and put that little bit of something different out of our minds and try and focus on the game.”

The circumstances of Ferencvaros’s visit to Celtic Park last season on Champions League qualifying duty were even more unusual, with the Hungarian side triumphing in front of an empty stadium.

Given how much has changed since then at both clubs, with new managers in both dugouts, McGregor doesn’t think that disappointing evening for his side will have any bearing on the outcome this time around.

“I’m probably the last one here,” he said. In fact, James Forrest and Greg Taylor are still at the club from the line-up that night, but both are injured and will play no part. Vasilis Barkas will be fortunate to make the bench.

“It’s almost a new team for us,” McGregor continued. “Obviously a new manager, so they won’t have that experience from last year.

“We’re just taking the game in isolation. We know where we are in terms of the group and what we need to do. We’re trying to keep a clear head and look at the game objectively. We know what needs to be done.

“It was obviously a poor result in terms of what we were trying to achieve. I don’t want to dwell on it too much as this is a completely new set of players and a new manager as well. I don’t think there’s anything good going to come out of trying to take us back to that place.

“We’re fully focused on what we need to do in this game. It’s new players, a new manager and a different system. We have to be positive in terms of looking forward to the game.

“They have a few players who played last year. In terms of that, maybe we can look at the players and understand the way they play in certain positions.

“They’ve slightly changed their system so that’s a different element that we need to deal with.

“We just try to take this game to them this year against us this year and obviously prepare properly for it.

“We know what we need to be doing to get a positive result.”
