MOTHERWELL manager Graham Alexander has signed 6’ 4” French utility player Victor Nirennold for the second time and he could feature against Hibernian tonight.

The nomadic Nirennold began his career in the USA with Miami City and has also played in Slovakia, Vietnam and Malaysia. He has moved to Fir Park on a Bosman until the end of the season.

“I had him at Fleetwood Town,” said Alexander. “Victor has good energy, he’s a great character and he contacted us when he came back to the UK. I invited him up for training and we liked what we saw.

“In Malaysia he was used up front but I see him either as a right-back or a right-sided centre-half or even right midfield.

“He gives us competition for places and he’s going to try and earn a longer-term contract so he’s motivated. He’s 30 years old and this was a no-brainer for us because he impressed everyone.

“We’re just waiting for clearance from the Malaysia FA because he’s physically fit and will be involved if the paperwork is done.

“There are a couple of other additions we hope to make after assessing the squad over the last week or so and the issues we’ve had all season. We need more defensive options and, possibly, a forward.”

Midfielder Ross Tierney, who signed from Bohemians last month, made his first appearance in Saturday’s Scottish Cup victory over Morton and claims that it was Britain’s decision to leave the European Union which brought him to prominence in Ireland.

“The Irish league a few years ago wasn’t as strong as it is now and I think Brexit has helped that,” he said.

“Boys can’t leave the country until they’re 18 now so the young lads come through the ranks, like I did. They’re playing senior football at home instead of youth team football over here and then maybe getting homesick and coming back at 21, thinking their career is over.

“The Irish league is becoming a bigger market and you can see how well Jamie McGrath has done at St Mirren. Many players have come over to Scotland from Ireland.

“I’ve been in touch with Johnny Kenny, who’s just signed for Celtic, who have Liam Scales as well. Meanwhile, Jake Carroll and Darragh O’Connor have helped me settle in here.”
