ABBI Grant helped Glasgow City move to the top of SWPL 1 with a 2-0 win over Hearts in difficult conditions at Petershill Park. City replace Rangers, whose trip to Aberdeen was cancelled because of expected high winds in the north-east.
Two second-half goals ensured the points for City and they are now one point ahead with a game in hand. The two leaders meet at Rangers' training centre ground on Sunday.
City have struggled to score first half goals in recent games and the pattern continued against a well organised Hearts side. Head coach Eileen Gleeson made two changes at the start of the second half, one of them being the introduction of winger Grant, who was signed on loan from Leicester City on Thursday.
The 26-year-old, who had two previous highly successful spells at City, set up the first goal when she fed Clare Shine on the edge of the box and the Republic of Ireland striker rifled the ball home.
A third substitute, Ode Fulutudilu, made sure of the points. The South African took her first touch of the game controlling a Priscila Chinchilla through ball and then rounded Charlotte Parker-Smith before tapping the ball home.
“I've always got big ambitions to win the league any time I'm at Glasgow City, so hopefully we can stay top and get a good result against Rangers next week,” a delighted Grant said.
Celtic beat bottom club Hamilton Accies 3-0 at the Penny Cars Stadium. The League Cup holders looked to be heading for a big win when top scorer Charlie Wellings put them ahead after only 60 seconds, but it required two goals in the final twelve minutes to seal the points.
Motherwell beat Spartans 3-0 in the only other SWPL 1 game, while Hibernian are through to the fourth round of the Scottish Cup following a 6-1 away win over SWPL 2 side St Johnstone.
